A revamp underway – Sevalaya & Whiteboard

Sevalaya is a charitable Trust established in 1988 with activities centered in and round the remote Kasuva village near Tiruninravur in Tiruvallur District, North West of Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India. The organization is professionally managed and is governed by a Board of Trustees drawn from industry with a deep commitment to social development.

Their activities are: Education for rural children, caring for the aged and providing capacity enhancements for the rural poor.

Sevalaya, headed by Mr Murali, currently serve 33 villages in and around Kasuva Village about 50 Kilometers from Chennai. All the services are rendered absolutely free of any charges, without any discrimination based on caste, creed, religion or gender.

Sevalaya & iVolunteer:

Seven months ago Mr.Murali approached Whiteboard (the initiative of IVolunteer) seeking help to revamp their organisation.  The following three Whiteboard members took initiative and have partnered to complete this Impact project.

1.     Mr .Sarath

Mr. Sarath is Country Head of Lionbridge Technologies, the world leader in Localization services. A post graduate from IIT and IIM Ahmadabad . In his corporate career spanning 28 years, his major stint was at Unilever where he worked in various functions like Profit Centre Management, Operations Management, Business Development, Commercial Management and Project Management. Sarath has a passion for teaching and is the founder of the Nalanda program, which is a comprehensive training program for project managers in Lionbridge. He also, has a good understanding of NGO operations and challenges, and in the light of his corporate experience provides them with practical solutions for some of their challenges.

       Mr. Sarath has contributed in the following activities: 

  • Technological solution for Tracking and Impact
  • Involved in the strategy and planning of the community college
  • Joined Sevalaya’s Board and helping to connect with other corporate 

2.     Mr. David Appasamy

Mr. David Appasamy has over 30 years of experience in business management, marketing, advertising, sales, internet, network and ecommerce services, investor relations and financial services.  He was earlier Executive Vice President at Sify Technologies.  He extensively works for the Development Sector.  David is qualified in hotel management and business management from the IIM, Ahmedabad. He is an avid photographer, traveller, reader, blogger and social media enthusiast.

 The following are some of the activities he involved:

  • David along with Abraham (whose details are given below) initiated Whiteboard meetings every Wednesday with PR and communication department of Sevalaya.
  • He has been involved with and contributed to developing the new brand identity for Sevalaya, as well as in developing its new website. Has also advised the organization in its fund raising efforts with corporate in Chennai.
  • He is involved in designing and revamping their logo, letter head, visiting card, envelope, invitation and social media (facebook).  Written script for telecallers on how to reach out to donors and how to send the follow-up mail.
  • Has joined Sevalaya’s Advisory Board on invitation.

3.    Mr. Thomas T Abraham

Mr. Thomas’ career in Corporate Communications has spanned over three decades, with Bank of Baroda, Larsen & Toubro, Bosch and Ashok Leyland. Since his retirement as Special Director, Corporate Communications, Ashok Leyland in 2010.  He has been consultant to business/non-profit organisations, with accent on brand rejuvenation and holistic implementation.

The following are some of the activities he involved:

  • He worked on preparing the Silver Jubilee and Annual Report
  • Mailers for each project
  • Prepared project proposals, Power Point presentations& good stories
  • Captured good photographs
  • Brought standardised name boards
  • Supported marketing and fundraising support along with Mr. David
  • Has joined Sevalaya’s Advisory Board on invitation.
